Jacques Villon, The Big Sister, drypoint engraving

La Grande Soeur

Ginestet & Pouillon 131

drypoint, 1904, on medium-weight cream laid paper with the "Arches" watermark, a very fine impression, with rich burr, and with selectively wiped plate tone setting off the younger sister, the rare 1st state (of 2), before the coloured version, with full deckle-edged margins, signed lower right in pencil, and numbered "8/15" lower left, two very short tears in right margin (less than 1 cm), otherwise in excellent condition

P. 399x317mm., S. 608x440mm.

Provenance: the artist's studio

This moving print represents the artist's two sisters, Yvonne and Madeleine, in an intimate scene of consolate tenderness.

The second state in colour exists in only a few impressions, making this a relatively rare print.
