Gabriel Pérelle

Suite of Six Italianate Landscapes, in the Round Le Blanc 77-102 (?) etchings, circa 1655 (?), a complete and homogeneous set of very fine and fresh impressions of the only known state (?), with Mariette's address, below, with narrow margins, on medium-fine ivory laid paper, two with crowned post-horn watermarks (which as a rule designates a Netherlandish paper), all with the "JNS" wetstamp verso, mounted on a backing sheet (with two small points of glue as is customary with this collector*), otherwise in excellent condition The Suite of Six Italianate Landscapes makes up one of Pérelle's renowned series of imaginary landscapes, impeccably etched, yet full of fantasy and dramatic rendering, animated by various figures. According to Mariette, Gabriel Pérelle (and his two sons) took their printmaking art to a height of perfection: [...] les Perelles ont si bien réussi dans les sujets de paysage, qu'ils en ont fait leur unique talent. Ils en ont mis au jour un nombre très considérable, qui sont presque tous de leur invention, et dont on ne peut assez admirer la beauté du travail. Jusques à eux, aucuns graveurs n'en ayoient exécuté avec autant de propreté, ny où la netteté des traits, la dégradation, l'accord et le passage harmonieux des ombres et des demi-teintes, par rapport au plan et à l'éloignement des objets, fussent observés avec autant de patience et de précision ; car ils ont poussé cette partie de la gravure au plus haut point de perfection où elle pouvait arriver […] " P. 122 x 122 mm; S. 126 x 126 mm. Provenance: Johann Nepomuk Seiler (Lugt 3976)* *Concerning this collection, Lugt further specifies: La collection de Seiler, conservée dans des albums et des portefeuilles, était classée par artistes et par écoles, les feuilles étant en général collées par deux coins sur des supports. [...]  Jusqu’à la vente de l’ensemble de la collection par Karl & Faber en 2008 et 2009, celle-ci était restée intacte chez les descendants de Seiler.  Les œuvres ayant été gardées à l’abri de la lumière pendant longtemps, les feuilles se trouvaient dans un très bon état, la plupart encore sur leurs anciens supports. À l’occasion de la dispersion de la collection, la maison de vente a fait faire une marque comportant les initiales J.N.S. dans un rectangle, qui a été apposée sur le verso en bas à gauche des dessins et des estampes. This set is presented in Seiler's original portfolio, with the artist's name in 19th-century calligraphy on the cover, and each print mounted as described by Lugt. We have examined the equivalent set in the Bibliothèque Nationale (formerly from the Bibliothèque Royale, with the "BR" stamp on the verso, and they compare in all aspects with the present set. The etchings of Gabrielle Perelle to our knowledge have never really been catalogued (aside from the vagure references in Le Blanc); need it be added that Pérelle produced over 700 etchings in his 30 years of activity, which makes this a daunting task.
